Now… what do YOU know about Pentecost Sunday?
Pentecost comes from the Greek word “pentekoste” which means fiftieth – as Pentecost Sunday takes place on the 50th day of Easter. It is the day the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. The symbols of Pentecost are those of the Holy Spirit and include flames, wind, the breath of God and a dove. Many Christian churches celebrate Pentecost Sunday to recognize the gift of the Holy Spirit, realizing that God’s very life, breath, and energy lives in believers. Members of the clergy and congregation often wear red as a symbol of the flames in which the Holy Spirit came to earth. You will notice, this Sunday, a few additions within the sanctuary having to do with some of the symbols of Pentecost. Perhaps take a few moments to recognize the importance of these symbols on this important day. Also, please feel free to wear something red in recognition of Pentecost Sunday!
Blessings to all as we approach Pentecost Sunday!
