A Message from Pastor Chad – Pentecost Sunday & Updates
Pentecost Sunday
Pentecost has its historical roots in the Jewish festival of Shavuot (also known as the Feast of Weeks), which always happens 50 days after Passover. This festival recognizes and celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. For the earliest followers of Jesus, the day gained new significance as it became the day the Holy Spirit was given to all believers. Gathered in Jerusalem, the disciples experienced a mighty rush of wind and saw tongues of fire resting on each of them, allowing them to speak and understand in various languages. This event amazed everyone present and became seen as the “birthday” of the Church. I hope this Sunday is a reminder of the Holy Spirit’s ongoing presence in our lives and our call to share God’s love in the world!
New Church Ministry Pentecost Offering
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has several special offerings throughout the year and one of them is this Sunday. The Pentecost Offering goes to support the movement of the Holy Spirit across the church especially in the founding of new churches and movements. Here is a short excerpt from the New Church Ministry website:
RESTORE AND REWIND
When it comes to church, we have a lot of negative tapes playing in our heads:
“Church is judgmental.”
“Church is hypocritical.”
“They think they’re better than everyone else.”
It’s time for restoration. Time to rewind the tape. New Church Ministry is dedicated to fostering faithful communities marked by deep Christian spirituality and a passion for God’s love and justice.
Please feel free to designate a gift to the Pentecost offering this Sunday!
Open & Affirming Conversation
After worship this Sunday, several members of our O&A team will be in the fellowship hall to receive questions, concerns, and/or ideas for moving forward. I will also be bringing some handouts and will be present to answer questions. We really hope to hear from you and are eager to have conversation.
Have a wonderful rest of the weekend and look forward to seeing you in worship! Wear red for Pentecost if you have it!
Peace,
Chad
