Message from Pastor Chad – Conversation & Prayer
This week, I’m reaching out to offer a word of encouragement in the wake of the recent election. I know we’re all carrying different responses—some of us with contentment, others with indifference, others with disappointment, anger, worry or even fear. These times can feel uncertain, and in these moments, it’s especially important to remember who we are as a family of faith. We have been encouraged for several months to do as the scriptures say, “make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph 4:3). Even when it is hard, let’s keep trying to do so!
I’m grateful to the many I’ve had a chance to listen with and talk to over the last few days. The gamut of emotions are certainly present and my heart aches for many situations. I’ve heard from people worried about their children who have brown and black skin. People who have legally immigrated from other countries who are worried they will face public ridicule and calls to “go back where you came from.” People are worried about what it means for themselves or their loved ones in the LGBTQ community. People are worried about women’s health and the rights of their daughters and granddaughters. People are wondering about their family dynamics and what the holidays will be like. Many are discouraged about the divisiveness and wonder if the wound will only get deeper. Others are confused and don’t quite understand what all the fuss is about. And yes, some are excited and hopeful for what the future holds. There are a lot of different perspectives present!
Remember… our job is not to judge whether or not someone’s worries, fears, concerns are legitimate or not, but to listen, to empathize, and to try to understand. The fears and concerns are real and while election rhetoric is generally cantankerous and contentious, there are reasons people feel afraid about what has been said and done. We may not agree, but we need more listening and more bridges to be built. Remember, too, that some people will need time to process all that has happened…please give time, space, and pray for those who very much need it.
Something I do know is that there is a lot of stuff that is not under our control, so let’s try to focus on the things we can. As God’s people, we can try to be our best selves and remember we are disciples of Christ. Let’s seek peace, offer compassion, extend grace, and create space to hear and respect one another. Let’s educate ourselves and stay informed. Let’s honor the Sabbath, practice self-care, take a walk, and recharge our batteries. Let’s grieve if you need to grieve and celebrate when you need to celebrate. Let’s remember that God is with us always AND to do as 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
This Sunday evening we will make space for conversation and prayer. I will be in the MCCC sanctuary from 5-6pm for open conversation and from 6-7p for prayer. Please come if you want to share what is on your mind and/or stay for silent prayer. Remember, you don’t have to stay the whole hours, but you are welcome to come and go as you feel led. If you just need to talk one-on-one please don’t hesitate to reach out and set an appointment with me. No matter who you voted for or whether feeling sad, angry, confused, joyful, or excited…I would be glad to listen and have a conversation with you.
This Sunday morning, we’ll come together on what it means to stand with courage and compassion in times of rebuilding, inspired by the resilience of God’s people in scripture. I hope you are a part of this, whether in person or online, as we come together to praise God, find strength and peace in God’s presence, and come together around the Lord’s Table.
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Thank you for being part of this community of unity and hope. Together, we can be a light for one another and for the world. Looking forward to being with you on Sunday!
Peace in Christ,
Chad
